Hi everyone,
Please use the comments section below to begin discussing and organizing your flash mob. This would be a good place to put some ideas out there, talk about good examples of previous flash mobs, and begin detailing some specifics like place and time.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Best,
Dr. Farman

So I think the ideas from our discussion section that stuck were, correct me if I’m wrong,:
1) funny walk on the mall (use Alma Mater playing as start of activity)
2) doing something in the dining hall
I know we also discussed freezing somewhere, as was discussed as a flash mob video that many of us have seen.
Let’s try to agree on an idea by tonight, and then tomorrow begin discussing roles (i.e. who will get information out to others about the flash mob, who will document (take pictures), who will organize everything detail and implementation-wise, etc.). Let’s make sure to keep in mind that we need to use our iPads significantly to complete this project in order to complete it successfully.
Look forward to hearing from you all soon!
God bless,
Triana A. McCorkle
Are there usually a lot of people on the McKeldin mall when the Alma Mater plays? The dining hall sounds like a good idea because an audience is pretty much guaranteed, but there isn’t too much room to maneuver.
There may not be a lot of people, since class usually starts at the hour…good thought Chester. Maybe it’s good that there isn’t much maneuvering space at the diner.
I think the freezing idea would work in the gym. We can have a bunch of people just working out as they normally would, and then at a predetermined time, we would all freeze mid-workout.
I think it might be a good idea to use the iPads as virtual Flash mobs coinciding with our flash mob. I think we could use twitter and mob some hashtag that’s popular here, possibly with instructions on how people could participate. We could search for local tweets wherever we want to flash mob using twitter on our iPads, and we’d all tweet on the most popular hashtags to get people’s attention saying something like “in two minutes everyone stand up and put their trays away at the same time” like at the diner and maybe get other people involved
Nice
As far as where I thought the idea of sometime before or after a basketball game would really put us near a large group of people only thing is that after a basketball game might be too late
Yeah, probably too late. Especially since we have to document the event, and it’ll be way dark out.
Darkness isn’t too much of an issue for documentation. Image quality might suffer a little, but Photoshop should be able to deal with a little noise, right?
Basketball game does sound like an interesting idea, though.
Well, part of our grade is going to be based on “innovative use of the iPad,” so I was thinking of something maybe incorporating music being played from them. The issue here would involve how loud they can be, but if we have many going at once, that could be solved, maybe.
I like the idea of playing music from the iPads, since the iPad use is a critical part of how we will be graded. Also we could consider all the iPads playing a video of some sort simultaneously or all the iPads could be showing the same picture.
Ditto
Can we get a list of ideas together? Right now, I think we’ve looked at the diner, the mall, and sports games as possible locations. Playing music with iPads has also been suggested. As far as actual plans for the activity, I’ve only heard of doing a funny walk on the mall and a ‘virtual’ DoS flash mob.
Any more ideas?
We decided on this Wednesday night at the south campus diner. We will enter the diner individually or in small groups sometime prior to 6:15 and sit at tables, eating, socializing, or otherwise blending in with other people. At 6:15, Claire and Katie will stand at the end of the dining hall by the tray conveyor belt thingy.
At this time, we will begin playing red-light green-light. What we need to figure out in terms of details is how we are going to be positioned for the pictures. A good idea Dr. Farman also supported was wearing similar clothing, like our bright blue north hill t-shirts, for the visual effect, but we could do something else, however the north hill shirts seem like the best idea right now. Also, we may want to sit near each other so that we’re together for the picture, or at least in groups so that we stand out. Claire suggested having the people seated farthest away from the “lights” getting up first, and as they move closer, more people will join in. This would help us seem to occupy the whole hall, but keep us together when the picture is taken. Respond with questions and ideas.
Ok, hopefully everyone is fully aware of what we need to do right now…
blue shirts, south campus diner at 6:15 (staggered arrival)
Yeah
Chester do you know where you’re planning on being to take pictures? It would probably be good to get some from different perspectives
I agree. I know Claire said she’s going to try to get Jenny to also take pictures
